Here is the thing most couples do not realise until somebody tells them: if you are having a celebrant-led ceremony, your venue does not need a marriage licence.
That single fact blows the whole list wide open. You are no longer picking from the twenty or so licensed places within driving distance. You can get married in a botanical garden, a restaurant, a gin library, your parents’ garden or the pub where you had your first date. The legal paperwork happens quietly at the register office, and the ceremony everyone remembers happens wherever you want it.
So with that in mind, here are some of the places around Surrey and South London that I would love to work in.
Morden Hall, Morden
An eighteenth century house sat in parkland with the River Wandle running through it, and it barely feels like London at all. There are lawns, roses and old trees, which means an outdoor ceremony here looks incredible without you having to decorate much at all.
Good for couples who want something green and grown-up but do not fancy driving two hours into the countryside.
Nonsuch Mansion, Cheam
Georgian, elegant and surrounded by a hundred acres of parkland. Nonsuch has the kind of frontage that makes your photographer visibly relax, and there is enough space to spread out if you have a big guest list.
Good for couples who want a traditional-looking day with a ceremony that is anything but traditional.
Hotel Du Vin Cannizaro House, Wimbledon
A country house hotel that happens to be sitting on the edge of Wimbledon Common, with gardens that feel genuinely tranquil and beautiful. It manages to be smart without being stuffy.
I am doing a wedding fair here in February 2027, which I am very excited about, so come and find me if you are venue hunting.
Kew Gardens
The obvious dream, and the reason it is on every Surrey list. Glasshouses, ancient trees, a completely different backdrop in every season. It is at the upper end for budget, so it tends to suit couples who are keeping the guest list tight and putting the money into the setting.
The Sun, Carshalton
Proof that a wedding venue does not need to be a stately home. The Sun has a beautiful gin library that I did a photoshoot in, and it has exactly the relaxed, characterful feel that a lot of my couples are after.
Good for anyone who wants the day to feel like a very good party that happens to include a ceremony.
And the Ones That Are Not on Any List
Some of the best ceremonies happen in places nobody would think to advertise. The hotel where you got engaged. The restaurant where you had your first date. A back garden with fairy lights and a gazebo on standby.
If a place means something to you, that meaning does more work than any amount of grandeur. I have written ceremonies around all sorts of settings and the ones that land hardest are always the ones with a story attached.
A Few Practical Things
Whatever you choose, check three things: whether they will host an outdoor ceremony and what the wet weather plan is, whether there is power and sound where you want to stand, and what time you can access the space to set up.
I will handle the rest. I arrive an hour early, coordinate with your venue and suppliers and make sure your ceremony space is set up perfectly, so you can spend the morning enjoying yourself instead of chasing chairs.
