Celebrant or Registrar? What’s the Difference?

This is far and away the question I get asked most, usually with a slightly worried face attached. So here is the whole thing, plainly.

The Short Version

A registrar does the legal marriage. A celebrant does the ceremony. In England and Wales, most couples who want a personal ceremony end up doing both, and it works out beautifully.

What a Registrar Can and Can’t Do

A registrar is a legal official. They make your marriage legally valid, which matters, and they are the only people who can do it.

What they cannot do. Registrars work from set legal wording with limited room to personalise. They can only officiate in licensed venues, so a garden, a beach or a barn without a licence is out. They cannot include anything religious. And your ceremony slot is typically short, timed and back to back with other couples that day.

None of that is a criticism. It is simply how the legal process works.

What a Celebrant Can and Can’t Do

I cannot make you legally married. That is the one limitation, and it is worth saying clearly.

Everything else is open. I write your ceremony from scratch, around your actual story. It can happen anywhere, at any time, for as long as you like. You can include handfasting, wine blending, a surprise ring bearer, your dog, your children, a reading in your grandmother’s language or your best friend performing a song badly. You get unlimited edits until every word is right, and you know exactly what is coming because you have read it.

So You Need Both. Isn’t That a Faff?

Genuinely, no.

The legal part is a short statutory appointment at your local register office. You give notice first, then book the ceremony itself. It takes around ten minutes, you need two witnesses, and it is the cheapest option the register office offers. Plenty of couples go on a quiet weekday with their parents or two friends, sign the paperwork and treat it as a lovely little prelude to the main event.

Then your real wedding day happens on your date, in your place, with your words, in front of everyone you love. Most couples I speak to say the admin appointment stopped feeling significant the moment they realised the ceremony they actually cared about was still ahead of them.

What About the Cost?

Yes, there are two costs instead of one. Register office fees are set by each local council, so check yours for the current figures. My wedding and vow renewal packages start at £650.

Here is how I would think about it. Your ceremony is the reason everyone travelled, took the day off, bought an outfit and sat down in rows. It is the only part of the day that is genuinely about the two of you, and it is the part your guests will still be talking about at Christmas. Deciding it is worth investing in properly is not extravagant. It is arguably the most sensible line in the whole budget.

How to Decide

If you want the legal bit done and you are happy with standard wording in a licensed venue, a registrar alone is perfectly good and will cost you less.

If you want your ceremony held somewhere meaningful, written around your story, with the freedom to include whatever you like, you want a celebrant, plus a quick trip to the register office.

Still not sure? Ask me. The first chat is free, there is no obligation, and I will give you a straight answer even if the answer is that you do not need me.
